Police arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of murder in the fatal shooting of a teenager on Sunday night in St. Paul.

SWAT officers took Dennis John Edmondson, of St. Paul, into custody in the backyard of a home in the 600 block of Cook Avenue in St. Paul on Monday shortly after 2:10 p.m., police said Tuesday.

They took him to St. Paul police headquarters and later booked him into the Ramsey County jail log on suspicion of second-degree murder and on a warrant for third-degree criminal sexual conduct from a past conviction.

On Sunday at about 8:45 p.m., Lavonte Baymond Love, 18, was driving when someone in another vehicle began shooting, according to police. Police received reports of shots fired from the area of Maria Avenue and East Seventh Street, and the vehicle came to a stop just west of Mounds Boulevard.

Love was shot. Paramedics took him to the hospital, where he died soon after.

Police said Monday that the shooting appeared to stem from a dispute that happened earlier in the night at another location.

Edmondson pleaded guilty to criminal sexual conduct in 2011, served prison time and remained under supervision by Ramsey County Community Corrections, according to the Minnesota Department of Corrections. He was charged in 2010 with raping a 13-year-old babysitter.
