Sixth-round pick Seth Williams among first wave of Broncos cuts

The Broncos began the process of cutting down their roster from 80 players to 53 late Monday afternoon by informing 14 players they will be placed on waivers.

NFL teams must set their initial 53-man roster by 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Leading the list is sixth-round rookie receiver Seth Williams, the only one of this year’s draft picks to be waived so far.

The full list, as confirmed by league sources: Williams, defensive tackle Isaiah Mack, fullback Adam Prentice, running back Stevie Scott, offensive tackle Drew Himmelman, center/guard Austin Schlottmann, outside linebacker Derrek Tuszka, inside linebacker Curtis Robinson, tight ends Shaun Beyer and Austin Fort, cornerbacks Saivion Smith and Mac McCain III, and receivers Tyrie Cleveland and Kendall Hinton.

Several of those players will be candidates to make up the Broncos’ 16-man practice squad if they clear waivers on Wednesday.

Prentice, Himmelman, Robinson, Beyer and McCain were undrafted rookie free agents, Tuszka and Cleveland were seventh-round picks last year, Fort missed 2019-20 with knee injuries but caught a touchdown pass against the Los Angeles Rams last Saturday, and Scott and Smith were signed for depth after training camp opened.

Williams had two catches in the preseason, including a 33-yard gain at Seattle on a flip pass from quarterback Drew Lock. The departures of him, Hinton and Cleveland is good news for Trinity Benson, who may stick on the initial roster as the sixth receiver.

Schlottmann, who played in 16 games last year, is a semi-surprise because the Broncos don’t have much in the way of an experienced backup center. If Lloyd Cushenberry is injured in-game, the options are moving starting right guard Graham Glasgow to center or going with rookie Quinn Meinerz.
