Saints’ Josh Winder named to Futures team

First, a promotion. And then, an honor.

Twins prospect Josh Winder, 24, who was promoted to Triple-A St. Paul on Monday, was named to the American League roster for the Futures Game on Wednesday. The game will take place July 11 at Coors Field in Denver.

Winder, the Twins’ No. 12 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was promoted to Triple-A after starting the season 3-0 with a 1.98 earned-run average in 10 starts with Double-A Wichita, and the Twins have been pleased with his development over the past season, even though Winder did not have a traditional season last year.

“He’s developing consistent command of his secondary stuff,” Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said. “All the things that you see of guys at that age. He’s got good feel of his fastball. He just needs to continue to progress.”

The American League team will be managed by former Twin LaTroy Hawkins. Former Twins pitching coach Garvin Alston will serve as the team’s pitching coach and Saints pitching coach Cibney Bello will be the team’s bullpen coach.

Former Gophers ace and Woodbury native Max Meyer, who was drafted third overall by the Marlins last year, will play for the National League team, as will Dodgers prospect Michael Busch, a pitcher who hails from Inver Grove Heights.
